Mark Carney will be the next PM of Canada

Mark Carney was elected with an overwhelming majority of Liberal members coming in first in all 343 ridings and getting a whopping 85.6% of the vote. Not even Trudeau in 2013 and Poilievre in 2022 got that level of support and both considered landslides. So its clear membership is clearly united behind Carney. His speech was reasonably good and off course best part was Chretien’s speech which was great, even for a 91 year old. I think party is in great shape to win next election which is a massive turnaround from 2 months ago.

Many claim Carney is too bland, but I do not believe that is necessarily always a bad thing. Right now we are in a very unpredictable situation and what we need a thoughtful experienced person not someone who panders to emotion and makes rash decisions. Reminds me if you are on a plane in an emergency; who do you want flying it? I used to watch MayDay and almost all the emergencies that ended with no fatalities were where you had an experienced calm pilot such as the miracle on the Hudson in 2009 where instead of all on flight dying plus many on ground; it safely ditched into Hudson with zero fatalities. With Trump being unpredictable and doing unmanageable, we need someone who is thoughtful and experienced to guide us through these tough times. Carney is that while Poilievre is not. Never mind people don’t like nastiness and Poilievre is that thus appeals to base but little beyond. Poilievre will probably in debates go into usual attack dog mode and while might work in normal times, I believe it will have opposite effect now.

In terms of how I will vote; notwithstanding difficulties due to travel plans, I would say there is a 99% chance I vote Liberal if able to in next election. I haven’t voted Liberal in over 15 years and voted for O’Toole in 2021 while never Trudeau in his three times, but I will for next time do so not as a liberal, not as a conservative but as a Canadian putting my country first. In these tough times, we need to think about what is best for country and I say that as someone who would probably do better under Poilievre than Carney but will put country interest ahead of my own. And for those saying that means Carney bad for ordinary people, I am in top bracket so not struggling so if Poilievre is good for wealthiest maybe he is not best for those struggling. But regardless of income for me, its about who can minimize the damage and re-orientate our economy. Carney led Bank of Canada through Great Recession and Bank of England through Brexit so he knows how to lead through a crisis and in both cases helped the countries avoid the worst. It will be a tough four years no matter what outcome thanks to person in White House but I believe with Carney we can minimize the damage and maybe once transition made and Trump gone thrive. I probably will disagree with some of his decisions but these are not normal times where we have our usual policy debates. Hopefully by 2029 things have calmed down and we can return to those. Some say Liberals have done such bad job deserve to lose and I agree they have done a horrible job but they are changing leaders and Carney is different than Trudeau. If no major headwinds, I would agree Liberals should be punished for their lousy 10 years, but with what we are facing, focus needs to be on who can best handle the next rough 4 years not what was done in past 10 years. Otherwise my vote is about who is best for future not how any party governed in the past.

  1. I agree with your points for the most part except who will do better under Carney than PP. I think all income levels will ultimately do better under the PM that can best deal with Trump and help Canada unite and build up our own strengths within. Carney has the business and finance experience, the relationships and networks across the business and political world at home and abroad, and the temperament to deal with Trump that is needed to accomplish those goals. PP does not. He is someone who has only held political posts since age 24, he has a pessimistic temperament, he has never succeeded in bringing the country together, and he has no deep business or political networks across Canada much less beyond our borders. And whatever you think of the past 10 years of our government, I don’t see many shining examples of better government elsewhere, and I try to never vote to punish water under the bridge anyway. Like you, I am going to vote for the best chance of a better future for Canada as we face an angry, narcissistic sociopath breathing down our necks at our southern border. That is for sure MC – and for sure NOT PP!

    1. I would make more money under Poilievre due to bigger tax cut but I also realize country will do better under Carney and country not individual is what matters especially those that are doing well. Its those struggling or just barely getting by that matter most and Carney is way better. And also keeping Canada an independent country matters a lot too. I would probably be richer if I lived in United States than Canada, but as someone who believes in Canadian values and dislikes many things in US I have zero desire to become American as whatever amount of additional money I make, it offsets all the negatives and its not like I still don’t enjoy a high standard of living in Canada.

      1. You might get richer for a year or two in Canada under PP taxation policies – but you might not. If Trump tanks his own economy (and ours and other countries) with a poorly executed trade war on multiple fronts (a very real possibility) – and if Canada isn’t able to build a stronger economy that insulates itself from a declining USA, a little tax break won’t makeup for a lot of decline over the longer run in the US, or here at home. And PP will not build that better Canadian economy, or manage Trump away from his worst instincts.

        1. Whether I get richer or not is besides point. In tough times those with broadest shoulders carry greatest weight. Elon Musk probably will get richer under Trump even though most Americans worse but I unlike have morals and will think about what is best for country.

I don’t think either can control Trump who is unhinged, its more about limiting damage to Canada and Carney can do a better job here.

  2. Mr. Lunn, in all fairness, you have made a lot of incorrect predictions over the past several years. It makes it hard to take you serious.

    1. I am quite confident he will win. Frank Graves from Ekos hinting Liberals have 10-20 point lead in recent roll. While doubt that lasts its big enough lead to ensure they win. With rise of nationalism and how much Canadians hate Trump, I honestly don’t see a path for a Conservative victory at this point.

      1. Mr. Lunn, I do not think you should vote for Carney. It’s the same team of Liberals that ran the Trudeau team. What a disaster that has been for Canada. Poilievre is not nearly the person you paint him to be. Vote Conservative, Mr. Lunn. Put your country first. Unless of course, you are secretly liberal.

        1. I disagree as Liberals are a big tent. Carney’s experience as Bank of Canada governor during Great Recession and Bank of England governor during Brexit shows he is right person to lead us through these tough times. Poilievre appeals to most extreme types and is too much of an ideologue.

Yes government has grown too big which even Carney gets but we need to trim excesses responsibly not slash and burn which I fear Poilievre will do. I am putting country first and Carney is definitely person who is best for Canada not Poilievre.

    1. Yes he dislikes Conservatives but zero evidence he rigs his polls. Only criticism maybe is on twitter he is quiet when Conservatives doing well while more noisy when doing badly but still all results he releases are based on actual data.

Polling nowadays with most using cell phones and with call display is a real challenge just as online is in terms of getting a representative panel. I believe pollsters from all firms try to do their best to be most accurate. I think just nature of polling makes it hard to reach some people so with any methodology always risk missing certain segments. But pollsters try best and always finding ways to correct this.

  3. Mr. Lunn,

Why does Frank Graves share so many youtube music videos on X every Friday night and then delete them Saturday morning?
